GANZ, Emil
Emil Ganz, a German immigrant who first tried his fortunes in Georgia, later came to Arizona and quickly achieved prominence with his Bank Exchange Hotel. After Phoenix was incorporated in 1881, it had a succession of weak mayors until 1885, when GANZ was elected. He put the city on a sound financial basis and inaugurated new services.

GALLEGO, Charlie C.
Charlie C. Gallego, 90, of Glendale, a retired electrician, died June 19, 1998. He was born in Bisbee and was a Navy veteran. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara DUBOIS; son, Charles E.; sister, Isabel; brother, Eddie; 11 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Phoenix Memorial Mortuary. GARLAND, Autrey Gene Sr.
Autrey Gene Garland, Sr., 96, of Phoenix, a retired construction laborer, died Sept. 3, 1998. He was born in Tollette, Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Maude; daughters, Elsie GRAY, Rachel WILLIAMS, Audrey TADJ, Lenora KINGSBY, Lois, Patricia, Myrtle and Sarah; sons, Gerald FEACHER, Robert TERRELL, Patrick, Cornelius and Autrey Jr.; sisters, Bobbie WALKER and Lottie JONES; 42 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. GILLS, Robert Singleton
GILLS, Robert Singleton, husband of Martha Virginia, passed away Sunday in Gila Bend. He is also survived by a son, Chester and a daughter, Mrs. J. P. (Susie) ECHOLS, both of Gila Bend; a brother, Oscar of Idabell, Oklahoma, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Mollie DOLLAR of Fresno, California, and Mrs. Myrtle GILL of Richmond, Calif. GOETTL, Adam Goettl 1907-1998
Founder Goettl Air Conditioning If Adam, Gust and William Goettl hadn't developed the evaporative cooler in the 1940s, metro Phoenix might not have grown to one of the nation's largest cities. The Goettls' product, which blows air across water-soaked pads, is credited with helping spur the Valley's growth after World War II. In 1939, they opened Goettl Brothers Metal Products Co. on south Central Avenue. The company, later called Goettl Air Conditioning Inc., was sold in 1977 to an investor.

GOLDWATER, Barry 1909-1998 Barry Goldwater
U.S. Senator. Barry Goldwater's political career started with his election to the Phoenix City Council in 1949. Three years later, he challenged and defeated Ernest McFarland, then Senate majority leader. Goldwater served in the Senate until 1964, when he campaigned unsuccessfully for president against Democrat Lyndon Johnson. In 1968, he ran again for the Senate and won. But in his last campaign in 1980, Goldwater barely edged ahead of Democratic challenger Bill Schulz, winning by about 9,400 votes. Goldwater retired after the end of the 1986 session.

GOSSETT, Rebecca Todd
Rebecca Todd GOSSETT, retired Librarian for the Maricopa County Library District Bookmobile, Phoenix, died October 19, 2002. She was 85. Gossett retired from Maricopa in 1980.

Greene, Robert M. "Bob"
Robert M. "Bob" GREENE, 84, of Sun City West was called to heaven September 28, 2004. Bob was born in Paullina Iowa on April 11, 1920 and grew up in Fargo, North Dakota. He is survived by his wife Connie, sisters Nancy and Carol, brother Bill, and nine children: Bob, Sharon, Bonnie, Mike, Joanna, Mary Kay, Bill, Mark, and Diana. Grandpa Greene was also extremely proud of his 18 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He honorably served his country for over 20 years in the U. S. Navy and retired as a Chief Hospital Corpsman. During his service, Chief Greene saw active duty in the Pacific during World War II and received several commendations including the Navy Unit Commendation for exceptionally meritorious service aboard the U.S.S. Crescent City during campaigns in Guadalcanal, Malaita, the Bougainville Landings, Guam, Southern Palaus, Leyte, and the Okinawa Operation. He also participated in the battle for Iwo Gima and received the American Defense Medal with Fleet Clasp, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific with 4 stars, American Theatre Ribbon, and Good Conduct with 2 stars. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Bob started his next career in Public Health which spanned over 25 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota. Bob retired from the counties of Maricopa, AZ and Napa, CA as the Director of Environmental Health. Most recently, he worked as a local realtor in the Sun Cities a Maricopa County area. Bob was an avid golfer, ham radio operator, and handball player who was happiest when spending time with his kids. A memorial service was held at Lakeview United Methodist Church, 10298 W. Thunderbird Blvd, Sun City, AZ 85351. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Sun Health Hospice, Sun City West or the Alzheimers Association. GRIMES, James D.
Miami – Services for James D. Grimes, 63, who died July 1, 1979, at Gila General Hospital in Globe, will be at Miles Chapel. Mr. Grimes, who lived here 23 years, was a retired security guard for the Anderson Development Company. Survivors include his wife, Pauline; three sons, Don GRIMES and William and Lee SPRADLING; one daughter, Mrs. Debbie HUNT; one brother and 10 grandchildren. GRIPPY, Zanna J.
Services for Zanna J. GRIPPY, 50, a loan officer with Transcontinental Mortgage Co., were in Grimshaw Bethany Chapel, 710 W. Bethany Home. Mrs. Grippy, 4401 N. 63rd Drive, came here in 1961 from Ohio and died July 3, 1979, in her home. She was a member of the Glendale Women’s Council, a real estate organization. Survivors include her husband, Robert L.; children, Lane GRIPPY, Randa, Eric and Brian C. BERNATH; mother, Dorothy E. COON; and a brother. Published in the Arizona Republic Friday, July 6, 1979, p. C-5.
