CALLIN, Robert T.
Robert T. Callin was born in Findlay, Ohio on December 16, 1920, to Bertha and John Q. CALLIN. He went to be with the Lord on February 26, 2007. Bob lived in Fostoria, Ohio, until 6th grade, and then moved to a farm near Bowling Green, Ohio, until 9th grade when his family moved to Florida in 1935. He attended high school in Orlando and Winter Park, Florida, but instead of graduating from high school, he joined the National Guard in 1939. He spent most of 1940-41 in the Army Infantry. He transferred to the United States Air Force in July of 1941. He was stationed at Luke Field during the war, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Shortly after arriving at Luke, he began attending (then) Calvary Baptist Church in Glendale where he met Nancy WITTER, an Arizona native, originally from Peoria. They soon married and during the next four years had two children, Vicki and Ted. After the war the family moved to Plainview, Texas where Bob attended Wayland College. He attended Phoenix College in 1948-49 and Grand Canyon College from 1949-1951. He was a member of the college choir and also in the first graduating class of five members while the college was still in Prescott. While at Grand Canyon he served as Student Body President and was voted Mr. Campus Favorite. He received his Masters Degree later from ASU. Bob was dedicated to education and instilled that value in his family. Having accepted Jesus as his Savior at the age of 14, Bob felt called to the ministry and pastored a small Baptist church in Hayden, AZ, from 1951-1953. After attending Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary from 1953-54, he moved his family back to Glendale and taught at Sullivan Elementary School in Phoenix for two years, then moved to the Glendale Elementary District where he taught most of his career at Sine Elementary. He retired in 1981. Bob and Nancy took special joy in cross-country trips in their motor home, and frequently took their grandchildren along on their many adventures. Bob and Nancy were married for 62 years before she passed away in 2004. Also predeceasing him are his parents, John and Bertha Callin, his sister Yvonne, his brother Norman, and his niece Virginia. Still here and missing him terribly are his daughter, Vicki HUNT and husband Tom; his son Ted Callin and wife Barbara; his grandchildren and great grandchildren Jeff VINCK, wife Tabor and daughter Addison; Tad Callin, wife Kate and children Cambria, Seamus, Lars and Mileady; Katie THOMPSON, husband Barry and children Ryan, Macie and Reagan; Sara HOBBS, husband Billy and children Caleb and Riley; and Chad VINCK and wife Carolyn. He also leaves behind a niece, Marilyn CARDWELL who lives in Atlanta, and a dear friend and "best buddy," Ruby GUYNES. He also leaves behind so very many dear friends whose lives he has touched over the years. Bob CALLIN had a gift for inspiring, encouraging, and embracing others. The world will be a less bright place without him in it. He will surely be missed. The good news that he would want everyone to know is that he is in heaven with Jesus-so don't worry about him. Private family burial will take place at Resthaven Park in Glendale. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Ironwood Camp, c/o Calvary Baptist Church, 8412 W. Washington, Peoria, AZ 85345. Published in The Arizona Republic on 3/4/2007.
