ABBEY, Col. Walter W.
Yuma -- Col. Walter W. Abbey, 67, U. S. Army (ret) died yesterday (May 17, 1967) at Yuma Proving Ground Hospital following a long illness from cancer. Col. Abbey recently underwent surgery at the U. S. Naval Hospital in San Diego and had returned a montha go to the proving ground hospital. The Abbeys had resided at their home at 1233 W. Second St. in Yuma since his retirement as Yuma Test Station commander in 1958. The colonel first came to Yuma in 1952, 38 years after he had joined the Army for service on the Mexican border. He served a total of 32 years in the Army with service in France and Germany during World War I and in the United States and Japan in World War II. The Oregon native adopted Yuma as his home and became active in community and civic life. Among his honorary titles were those of honorary chief of police, honorary mayor of Yuma and honorary deputy sheriff in both Yuma and Imperial, California counties. Arizona Gov. Ernest W. McFarland highlighted Col. Abbey's six-year command on April 5, 1958, by proclaiming that day as "Col. Abbey Day" in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country and the state of Arizona. On his retirement, Col. Abbey was presented the Presidential Legion of Merit medal for "exceptionally meritorious conduct" as commanding officer of the test station. Surviving are his wife, Juanita; a son, Army 1st Sgt. Richard Abbey, serving in Vietnam, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur Larsen of Eugene, Oregon. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. 5/18/1967.

Mrs. Shirley E. Abraham, 54, of 1702 W. Tuckey Lane, died Sunday, August 6, 1967, in Good Samaritan Hospital. She had been a Phoenix resident since 1961, moving here from Tucson. She was born in Chicago. Funeral services and burial will be in Chicago. Survivors include her husband, Howard; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Coppa of Awahehee, Nevada, and Mrs. Sue Ellen Kaufman of Phoenix; and one grandchild. The Arizona Republic Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1967.

Funeral services tomorrow in A. L. Moore & Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams, for Mrs. Luna F. Ale, 91, who died yesterday, August 7, 1967, in St. Joseph's Hospital. Mrs. Ale, of 301 W. Cambridge, was born in Fairmont, Indiana, and moved to Arizona 15 years ago from Nebraska where she was a ready-to-wear clothing merchant. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Alliance, Nebraska, and the Encanto Community Church in Phoenix. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Miami -- Services for Miss Virginia Arnold Allewelt, 63, who died Monday, May 15, 1967, at the Gila General Hospital in Globe, will be today in the Miles Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Syracuse, N. Y. Miss Allewelt was a native of Syracuse. She had been a resident of MIami for the past two years. ALLOWAY, Donald Wayne, State Employee Found Dead
An auditor for the State Tax Commission died yesterday, Aug. 19, 1967, apparently of an overdose of barbituates, police said. Investigators identified him as Donald Wayne Alloway, 40, a resident of the Sands Motel, 3320 E. Van Buren. Detective Arnold Carlson said an employee of the motel discovered Alloway's body when she went to clean his room. A note indicating despondency was found near the body, Carlson, said. ANDERSON, Mary Christine
Prescott -- Services for Mrs. Mary Christine Anderson, 84, who died May 1, 1967, in the Arizona Pioneers Home were in the Chapel of the Garden. Burial in Masonic Cemetery in Prescott. Mrs. Anderson, a native of Sweden, had been a resident of Arizona 52 years, coming to Phoenix in 1915. She moved to Prescott 45 years ago and had been a resident of the Arizona Pioneers Home the past four years. Mrs. Anderson was an active member of Prescott Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
